Planning for a healthy disney vacation

The countdown to my family's next Walt Disney World trip is on! Ok, it's been on for a while, but it's starting to feel real now.

For me, planning our trips are almost as fun as actually going: which FastPasses we plan to get, what rides and shows we want to experience—all that fun stuff. Even the money budgeting aspect is kind of fun for me.

One thing I've never really planned, though, is how to maintain a healthy lifestyle while on a Disney vacation.

Oh, I've been on Weight Watchers before when traveling. However, I usually just set it aside.

"I'll worry about it when I get back. I'm on vacation!"

You can imagine how well that's worked out. Um, it hasn't.

If I'm planning to live this way for the rest of my life, I need to start looking ahead and meeting the challenges as early as possible. I probably won't be perfect. But, as I like to say I'm learning about "progress not perfection."

The last couple of times we've gone to WDW (the most recent trip being this past April), I needed a scooter to get through the day. At first, I was ashamed (and, honestly still am a little), but it made a huge difference in my enjoyment of the trip.

Walt Disney World requires a TON of walking. Like, on a normal day, we log more than 10 miles just walking around the parks, resorts, etc. Ouch! At my weight, it was no wonder I couldn't hack it! Even for a healthy person, that's a lot of steps!!

Our next trip is in December and I have put a scooter on reserve. I was hoping not to need it. But, I worry that if I don't have one, I might regret it. One of my "whys" for getting healthy is to reach the point where I don't even need to think about it.

I think I will do much better with endurance this trip with all the activity I'm getting and the weight I've already lost. I'm just not sure I'm ready to go totally without a scooter. I also don't want to wait until we get down there to decide because December is a busy time down at Mickey Mouse's house! So, I think I'll keep the reservation, just in case.

I'm hoping to lose another 15 before heading down there in late December. That would bring me to a total of 50 lbs lost. It's a stretch, but I'm going for it!

The next step of my planning will include meals. How to stay On Plan while at WDW. It won't be easy. There aren't any easy ways to get nutritional information and calculate points for my day. However, I am starting to look at the menus of the places we like to go and search out healthier options. Instead of a big, bacon cheeseburger, I'm looking for grilled chicken, salads, etc. I'm also considering splitting meals with my husband, so I can have some of the things I truly enjoy. The meals at WDW are pretty big, so that might work.

I plan to have an idea of what I'm having each day, so I can have my meals entered in my WW app ahead of time and adjust as necessary. Trying to decide on the fly won't cut it. Too many temptations.

Also, I want to plan to have some treats! Denying myself everything won't work for the long term. I don't want to be a martyr.

Of course, if anyone has any advice or tips, leave a comment! I'm always open to suggestions!
